Oakville is a town located in Southern Ontario, Canada, on the shores of Lake Ontario. It is part of the Greater Toronto Area and is located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Toronto. The area now known as Oakville has a long and storied history dating back thousands of years.
 
The land that Oakville now occupies has been home to many different Indigenous peoples over the years. The Mississaugas, a branch of the Ojibwe people, lived in the area for many centuries before European colonization. The Mississaugas called the area "Nokiiwin," which means "the place where the land meets the water."
